Mine was a midlife crisis for the ages. I faced divorce, my father’s death, failed businesses, compromised career and credit, slander, libel, discrimination, poisoning, hospitalizations, and even criminal charges at one point! It was hard to bear but also hard to watch; very few friends and family stuck around to see if I’d survive. After my fiancée left, I wasn’t sure I would either. Given the comprehensive collapse of my mental, marital, professional, social, and financial health, my braintrust advised me to retain experts in finance and forensics for bespoke services—services few would offer without a notable referral and retainer. But Olga was worth every penny. Step by step, she revealed how I’d been exploited by family, companies, customers, and agencies—all of whom had assumed the worst of me and expected me to surrender and start over from scratch. A less stubborn man might have filed for bankruptcy. But Olga’s patient scrutiny spared me literally tens of thousands of dollars in taxes and penalties I should never have accrued. Every hero needs a villain to teach them when and why to fight. As a disabled entrepreneur with a dynamic disability, my foes are formidable, including pervasive interpersonal and systemic stigma, blatant workplace discrimination, and even persecution by police who treat the mentally ill as a problem rather than as part of the population they swore to protect. Most Americans like me, who live with severe mental illness, are unemployed or underemployed and near the poverty line. Having made it through that gauntlet, I understand why 40% of us attempt suicide. Bipolar stigma is real, and it kills my peers every single day. But my father taught me not to quit—that a champion stands up when he falls, no matter what. As a dad myself, I’m showing his grandson how to stand up for himself and also how to ask for help when he needs it. Thanks to Olga’s bespoke services and the strategy she helped me form, I stand tall today—atop the very dragons she helped me slay. I can see the shape of my next chapter, and I know her services will continue to play a crucial role.
