I strongly recommend AGAINST using Mike McKenna for your taxes. He made several significant mistakes with ours that resulted in thousands of dollars in taxes we did not anticipate, plus penalties and interest. He did not return calls or emails when we reached out to try to resolve the problems. And he has never apologized. Here are the mistakes he made: 1. He submitted the taxes to the IRS before we had a chance to review them and a day ahead of the schedule we had discussed. This had two consequences: a) we were unable to catch the fact that he had failed to include two significant items of income which meant the total taxes due were wrong, and 2) the funds to pay the taxes were not yet in the account when the IRS tried to debit the account, resulting in a penalty of several hundred dollars 2. Mike’s failure to include two items of income ( for which we had provided the information and documentation) led to our receiving a notice several weeks after our taxes were filed that we owed several thousand dollars more in taxes than we expected AND were being charged interest on the late payment. We paid the taxes but asked Mike to pay the penalty and interest resulting from his errors. 3. In May, Mike said he “would take care of it.” However, in November, we received notice from the IRS that additional interest had accrued on the unpaid penalty and interest and was due immediately. I sent the money to the IRS and tried reaching Mike since this was the payment he had said he would take care of but he would not return or take my calls. 4. I wrote an email, telling Mike we had made the payment and requesting that he reimburse us. He finally wrote that he had written to the IRS after our conversation in May but guessed that hadn’t taken care of it and again said he would take care of it. 5. When I had not received a check after several weeks, I was told by his secretary that he said he had paid it TO THE IRS, even though I told him in my email that I had already paid it and was looking for reimbursement. While I have confirmed with the IRS that a second payment was received which they said they would send to me, I am still waiting for their check. I have never heard from Mike again and he has never apologized. In my opinion, his conduct here was not only professional malpractice but also unprofessional and just plain rude. I would not trust him with your taxes.
